Help! [Nov. 10th, 2008|01:14 am]

Hello, my Hebraic homies!

So despite being born and raised a member of the tribe, I never experienced the glory that was Jewish overnight camp.

I'm writing a musical, however, and the first act takes place at Camp Myrtle Wyckoff, a fictional Jewish overnight camp in East Schmaltz, New Hampshire. It's a movie musical (think "Hebrew School Musical") and in the interest of time, I'm showing the development of Yael and Shlomo's relationship through a montage of them doing fun summer camp activities.

So, friends, I'm looking for your input....

What were the highlights of YOUR Jewish overnight camp experiences?

Well, I never met a kid named Shlomo. Lots of Adams and Jacobs, though.

Yeah, Shlomo's just the character's Hebrew name but he's trying to be ~mysterious~ and won't tell anyone his real name.

I dated a guy once who told me that all the guys at his Jewish summer camp used to pour Gold Bond powder down their boxers. That was apparently all he remembered about camp.

Also, the guys putting the girls' mattresses on the roof.

And chicken nugget day and grilled cheese/tomato soup day.

Probably the one thing I liked about camp.

I've never been, but I was at a party and heard a hilarious account of someone else's experience of being kicked out of overnight Jew summer camp for encouraging the kids to toss rotten eggs at other campers.

Getting woken up by the counselors blowing shofars. Also, HAND CHECKS to make sure we weren't touching each other anywhere.... naughty. We'd all have to throw our hands up.

These are technically from NFTY camps/overnights, not summer camps, but they're still fun to include, I think.
